Do you mean the piece that covers the console and curves upward to surround the cubby/ash tray and the seat heater/ventilator switches? If so, then yes this piece needs to be removed too.
On the "wood dash" cars this piece is plastic covered by a paper thin veneer of wood. I wouldn't be surprised if this piece is plastic covered with carbon fiber cloth on your car. Even the wood covered piece is fragile and must be carefully lifted to clear the leading edge of the shifter surround.
