Having owned 3 generations of Maxima, and rented the newest generation -- here are my opinions.
I'll disagree with buddy, but I think Maximas are great cars -- at the very top in terms of reliability. And reasonably good handling -- but the previous 2 generations less so. Very nice, but not as sporty as I'd like (my last Maxima was the same as the one you are considering. The v-6 is fast, strong, smooth.
I had one Nissan dealer that was fabulous -- loaner cars for any service, while the other one was just ok. So far my Saab dealer has bent over backwards to be accomodating.
However -- since snow is an issue -- I can't say that any of my Maximas inspired confidence in snow -- with and without snow tires. No ESP or TCS of any kind, either.
I've only had my '02 linear a few months, and driven just once in the snow (9') -- so far so good!
Perhaps it comes down to which car has been better maintained? I believe the maxima will be more forgiving of less than perfect maintainence than the 9-5. And, there are far less electronics to go wrong on the maxima.
Good luck with your choice.
Pete
