if you look of the Maxima is acceptable to you.
Nissan cars have a lot of cheap plastics in their new models, such as Altima, and even the 350Z but the Maxima actually is quite nicely done. BTW, I find 9-5 switches inferior to the older 9000s. You could also look at the I35 and it is very well appointed inside but at a price close to or above a 2002 Aero 5-speed.
When you go back to take a second look at the Maxima, open and close the door and see whether you like the sound of the door closing. A small amount of damping material in those Nissan doors would win a lot of people over.
I see that you are somewhat partial to the manual transmission, if not, I would suggest you give the Honda Accord EX V6 a try. It is a very well designed car with excellent interior and reasonably good seats all at about $26 - 28K. Although the Accord isn't head turning but personally I like its exterior better than the Nissan.
As a current owner of three Saabs ('92 9000S, '95 9000 Aero, '03 9-5 Aero) you know I am biased but the competitions certainly offer a lot for cheaper prices.
Let us know what you end up with.
