your description of engine management is correct, when above 77F and 90AON or less is used.
Saab didn't say in the manual: "If AON 90 is used, some decrease in engine power can occur to some extent."
They said: "If AON 90 is used, and the ambient temperature is above 77-86 F(25-30 C)....some decrease in engine power can occur to some extent."
So, for colder temperatures, there is not a loss in performance with reasonably lower octanes.
I'm not saying that 87 is reasonable, by 89 might be.
