TG it takes a certain amount of "force" or power to move a car. So if lower octane = less power, less boost than higher octane = more power more boost, the lesser power would have to be made up by more engine rpms, which entails more fuel consumption. This assumes the cars are driven equal distancers under equal accelaeration and speed.
My belief is that whether or not higher or lower octane results in different gas consumption varies by engine mgmt system utilized and how the car is driven. For the first two yrs of driving my 9^5, I used 87 octane, but switched to 91 after my DI failed. I've noticed both an increase in throttle response (power) and an increase of overall 1 to 2 miles per gallon. This increase is noted over approx. 6,000 miles since I switched to 91. My driving style has not changed, I still drive for the most part in a moderate style,
