Given your outline of Trionic:
You said:
"The knock sensor, coupled with the ECU, fuel ratio, and spark timing all serve to work to gether to maximize engine power.
More power = more boost = more fuel consumption.
Conversely when you use a lower octane fuel, the knock sensor directs the computer(ECU) to make fuel/air changes, and retards spark timing.
Less engine power = less boost = less fuel consuption."
All this is correct for a driver with a foot to the floor. We don't get to drive that way on account of the fools in front of us...We are driving at a fixed speed, with a constant power output. The ability of trionic controls to adjust the engine timing to take advantage of higher octane fuel is what reduces the consumption rate.
The "one test" was in fact a fill-up in the middle of a trip. All the variables were controlled: temperature, load, vehicle condition - the only thing that changed was the fuel, and the mileage change was instantaneous. As stated, I was contstrained by the - ahem - tire situation to assuming the role of a moving obstacle in the right lane.
