I think it's fun to see a car dealer in disbelief of what SAAB (factory) engineers, and fuel engineers support on this topic. And at length on the 9-3 and NG 900 BB which has now moved over here.
But car engines, and SAAB engines included in this, make more power than what is needed to go down the road to gently accelerate and cruise.
And if you agree that:
Trionic knock sensor does indeed work with ECU to regulate the air/fuel mixture, and spark timing to maximize engine power output.
And you agree: spark knock detection by Trionic reduces the turbo boost and retards the ignition timing.
If you don't agree with mw so far--you need to bone-up on Trionics -----
But continuing--now I'll add fuel into the equasion here
With a lower octane, the Trionic system detects knock(sooner than with high octane),thereby telling the ECU the reduce boost, and retard the ignition timing, and adjust the a/f mixture accordingly.
Less boost=less power, and less boost is using less gas , and less gas is better MPGs.
