While driving last night, I tried to pay attention to this.
I did notice there was a very very brief period where the tach stayed in place. I did not ever see it actually rise at all. After that, it began a fairly steady fall. I should be picking up the Alfa tonight and will pay attention to how responsive that is to falling off (just for a data point with virtually no computer equipment in it at all). The old 900's down for the moment otherwise I'd compare to that.
I wonder if maybe there's a bit of a disconnect between eye and foot though. At the top of the pedal, there is little pressure so perhaps when we're 80% off the accelerator, our brains perceive that we are now fully off. With the clutch disengaged (pedal engaged), the engine would spin easily and might maintain or even raise RPM's as we move our foot off the remaining 20% of the pedal. Just a theory - not trying to say you (or anyone) isn't seeing this but it struck me that the RPM's just held ever so briefly in my car and given the speed with which I moved my foot off the pedal, maybe that was it???
Similarly, if you begin disengaging the clutch (pushing the pedal), before you start moving off the accelerator, you should get a little blip on the tach. Same concept but different perspective.
Opinions?
My gut says that the clutch is just so light on our 9-5's that we tend not have as much feel as some of the other cars we drive. I know my 328i's clutch was heavier, as is the Alfa.
