How to shift Aero 5-spd (long)

I recently bought a 2000 9-5 Aero 5-speed with about 6500 miles. Overall I love the car. My biggest gripe, though, is with 1st gear. When accelerating from a standstill, if I engage the clutch at low RPM, then I get weak acceleration sometimes accompanied by an audible vibration in the steering column. If I rev the engine to ~2k RPM and ride the clutch a little to get the car rolling then the acceleration is better and I don't get the vibe sound, however I wary of driving it that way since I don't want to be hard on the clutch. Then when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd, if I shift quickly, the car lurches as I engage 2nd since the engine continues to rev even after taking my foot off the gas. This seems to be a common trait of the 2.3L engine as noted in the post referenced below. Put these traits together, and the Aero does NOT generally feel like a powerful car when driving around town and trying to shift smoothly.
I'm interested in advice on how to best manage the shifting and acceletion, particularly when engaging 1st gear from a standstill and when changing from 1st to 2nd. Note that I am aware of torque curve starting ~2k RPM, but when starting from a standstill you don't have it. I've driven plenty of other manual transmission cars, but this is my first turbo and the first time I've had a car this big/heavy with such a small engine. For reference, the Aero is replacing a '93 Ford Probe GT 5-spd 2.5L V6. I don't have any problems managing the gears in that car.
Thanks in advance for any input!
