Below is a link to a 1982 EPA document which discusses how much fuel mileage crdeit a manufacture will get for having a Shift Indicator Light.

Since SAAB is still using the shift indicator light at some cost to SAAB, I can only assume that the EPA or other agencies are still allowing some CAFE mileage "credit" for the use of these lights.
