Fast acceleration to a low shift point might be a proven way to conserve gas, but is there any proof that the presence of a Shift Up light saves gas? Have any studies been done on this?
My wife is a good 5sp driver - she has her own 9000 5 speed - but my Aero was almost not drivable by her until the UpShift light was turned off. She is a good citizen and every time she saw the 'Shift Up' command on the dash, she would dutifully do so with the end result being that she was constantly driving around the city in 5th gear. This, in no way is a criticism of her, she is a good driver. It just points out the stupidity of this light.
Which is less harmful to the environment - a potential 3 or 4% gas savings or an engine rebuild?
As I understand it, the Upshift light is not a Saab thing, rather it has been put to Saab by the EPA. Your tax dollars at work. It's almost enough to make us all Republicans!
