It's almost like the old joke "if you have to ask the price you can't afford it." In this case if you have to ask, I'm not sure I can explain it to you. I could list 100 things to check and the 101st thing would be what trips you up. It's compounded by the fact it's very difficult to thoroughly check a car out "in the field." When I was a dealer I used to buy a lot of cars at auction and since I'd often look at 10 or 15, I typically had to make a decision in a very short time. The important thing is to drive it. If anything doesn't "feel" right it probably isn't and you need to figure out what's wrong before you make a move. The next step is to look for leaking fluids in the engine compartment and under the car. Then look at the fluids themselves (oil, antifreeze, trans fluid if an auto)--if you need a baseline then looks at the fluids in the car you drive and make sure they look the same. Finally look and listen to the engine when running. If you hear anything that doesn't sound right then again you have to figure out what it is. With experience you can pretty accurately figure out the condition of a car just checking what I've suggested--but experience is the crucial requirement. If you aren't sure what to look for then there's not substitute for having someone who does look at the car.
