Seriously, dealers are out of this world. Given, OEM parts are at least twice as expensive as aftermarket and will definitely last longer and fit better right out of the box, but still!
I called the Nissan dealer last night to see about price for a simple fuel level sender in my wife's new Xterra. $360 they said. I could hear him talking it over with a tech as he had the phone partially covered in his hand. He was talking about replacing the entire fuel pump before I (a very new Nissan owner) asked if it was possible to replace the sender without replacing the pump. It took some convincing before he even checked into it and found that yes, you can do that. Still would cost about the same though (price included a $50 rubber o-ring). Within 5 minutes I found the sender for $40 and the stupid o-ring for $10. No fuel pump necessary. Price quoted included two hours of work. I asked if that was a not-to-exceed price, or was it a set price. He said it was a set price that included 2 hours of labor. So if it actually took 15 minutes, they would still charge for 2 hours.
This is the kind of thing that leads a person to buy Saabs and learn to do all the work on them him/herself until they one day find themselves with 4 broken Saabs in the driveway and an angry spouse with no parking spot.
