It sounds to me like you just have a broken belt, maybe two. Harmonic balancers just don't up and quit. You usually get squealing for a few weeks, then they just spin in place.
When a belt breaks, it can cause all kinds of mayhem. I've seen them pull speedo cables from the transmission, snap the barbs off the heater core, and destroy anything else that may be in the path as they are flailing around.
Your car likely overheated because the water pump stopped spinning when the belt broke. You may have coolant leaking from that, or because the belt scored a hose (or snapped a barb off the heater core--that would suck). I suppose a belt could have gotten pinched after it broke and damaged the harmonic balancer after that--but not likely.
