Years ago we had a ME class (Local College) tour our shop and afterwards a nice young young man ask my advice on a problem he was having with our local Ford dealer! He had a 4 wheel drive Ford pickup that had a bad outer front full floating bearing. They told him that the only way to fix it was to install a whole new housing and by the time they reset the ring and pinion along with all of the labor and parts it would cost over $6,000! I had him tow it to a friends truck repair shop then I went over and TIG welded the inside of the bearing race so it would fall out, polished up the axle shaft and put it back together with new bearings. Total cost was under $100! The Bureau of Automotive Repair had preciously done a sting operation on this particular dealership and fined them big time but they just kept right on bending their customers over and haven't been caught since as far as I know? It's unbelievable what dealerships get away with!
