My 87 900 turbo seems to routinely ping and knock during acceleration (ranging from slow and gentle all the way to aggressive speed gains).
I'm very gentle with the car as a result and a little irritated I can't enjoy the full turbo effect.
I've studiously chased down vacuum leaks while also keeping the routine items up to date: new plugs, cap, rotor, Magnacore wires, new O2 sensor, new fuel pump a couple of years ago.
I'm using a Bosch-rebuilt AMM procured on eBay a few years ago and during my last emissions inspection report here in California, the center told me the AMM had a "flat spot" on the readout that suggested the meter isn't 100%.
The pinging/knocking usually happens during moderate to warm ambient air temperatures. Occasionally the car feels lively with power to spare and without knocking on cool, moist days. The contrast in driving performance seems striking to me.
I think my car is running a little lean and I'm dubious of my AMM. But I'm also a little dismayed at the options; rebuilds don't have great reputations (I've had experience with several of them during a smog-inspection phase several years ago). And I don't have room, time and access to any later 900s where I might lift off the Bosch LH 2.4 system and transplant it to my 87.
I'm wondering if an item I just noticed on eEuroparts today would help: a Air Fuel Ratio Monitor Kit (Wideband) - NTK 96604.
Does anyone have experience with such an item? Could it help restore normal turbo performance? And would it flunk me out of a California emissions inspection?
Anyone?
Thanks.
