The other thing that occurred to me is if there were carbon deposits on the top of the pistons or in the combustion chamber, then they could be hot spots that would promote detonation. An application of Sea Foam ( good lord don't let anyone see you do that in LA ) per the can instructions and then split a can into the next two fuel fillups would help erase any carbon in the combustion chamber, but I'd do that after you ditch those Magnecor wires for the Bougs.....
Even if the vacuum capsule holds negative pressure ( suction in other words ) make sure the arm is actuating the timing retard. I just use a mityvac on the line to the servo, pull a vacuum and watch to see if the timing retards.
If it doesn't, there is something internal to the distributor like the arm is broken or disconnected or the distributor is fouled up to the point it won't let the mechansim rotate. Be careful of that oval plug as it will disintegrate just thinking about it......
