Isn't the only signal that the AMM provides is voltage? Since there isn't an OBD type of connector, they must have connected to the wire INSIDE the boot that connects to the AMM and pulled the voltage at the different speeds. Or, I suppose that they could have a special plug that goes in between the AMM and the connector that attaches to it.
Having said all that, I don't know CA smog specs, but I do know how to clamp voltage on an AMM so it won't go to fuel cut when we put all kinds of racing stuff on an engine -- it would fail smog so fast that I can hear sirens as I'm writing this post.....
Sure wish Justin Van Abrahams would chime in as I've seen posts from him on these kinds of subjects.
