OK, so you're going in a place where men have gone before, and yes, it is frustrating.
I would suggest that you try pinching the hose ( hoses ) to the AIC and see if the behavior changes. Do you have another AIC to swap in to see if that makes any change?
I had a similar problem when I was trying to use bigger injectors, and a fuel chip, and couldn't get the idle to settle down. I put on a manual ( 8 valve ) idle control and that solved the problem. But, the problem could have been that the hoses to and from the AIC were the problem or the connection.
Others I have seen that had an idle issue would put a hardware store valve in place of the AIC and manually set it. To me, that would be just a diagnostic fix to then trace back to the area needing to be fixed.
My thought was perhaps the seal between the intake manifold and the throttle body has finally given up. It's a large OD O ring. In order to find out, you have to plan on replacing it anyway.
If it were mine, and I knew for a fact there were no vacuum leaks, I would try a manual idle circuit, or find a plastic hardware store valve to put in place of the AIC to narrow down the problem, or at least eliminate that from your possibilities.
The 88 has LH2.4 and there are some micro switches and other things on the throttle body that could be contributing to a stuck mechanism. Have a helper push the throttle while you watch to see if you have a complete cycle of closed to WOT and then return to complete closure. I'd take off the intercooler hose to look into the TB to see and watch the behavior of how it operates. It could be as simple as adjustment of the throttle cable. Best of luck as you need some when the problems begin to get worse, when trying solutions to get it better.
