I think CD-R's are harder for players to read than the standard store-bought variety, and flaws in the player's laser lens may show up more readily with them. But I would try changing the media first, and if your Clarion (aka HK) player craps out call Mike at Kachina to line up a refurb. I got mine for about $100 plus my old unit, if I recall, though they were having trouble with Clarion's repair dept. at the time--so I'm not sure the status of this service.

I've used nothing but the 80's for a year or more, and would say that if your player has trouble with the 80-min. Verbatims, it's time for a refurb. Mine plays them flawlessly, but my old unit got worse over time in its ability to play even the Verbatim CD-R's and store-bought CD's.

I'm a commerical photographer and shoot all digital nowadays, so I use CD-R's in quantity. I almost never burn a coaster and have never had a complaint from anyone about reading the Verbatims, even the cheaper, lower-quality Valu-Life variety. About two years ago I used the more-expensive Mitsui, recommended at the time by many CD gurus, and I also had good luck with them.

Buy.com has the Verbatims in 50-disk spindles, but the prices I'm seeing there and on Bizrate.com don't compare to Sam's, where I think I paid $22 for my last 100-disk spindle.
