First:
So we're in my '96 9K, 15 minutes and 10 miles from home on Saturday heading for the airport, 65 miles away where a plane awaits younger daughter. Wife and daughter are on board. And the engine suddenly dies, Check Engine light flashing. Won't restart. I pull out the known-good, spare DI and put that in. No change. So now I'm thinking fuel pump, although the one in there has only about 60K or so on it.
Call AAA for a tow and call other daughter to bring the 9-5 and to station her with the 9K to await AAA. She arrives and we head to the airport, and daughter (barely) make her plane.
The car was towed to my indy, even though he was closed, so I go over there to see what I can figure out. First I pull the CEL codes: P-0300 and P-0301-- both are misfire codes. Sounds like the DI was the culprit. But why wouldn't it restart when I installed a good one? I get in, turn the key and hear the FP fire up. OK, so far so good. Then I crank the engine and it fires right up. Hmmm. Now I'm thinking CPS, since the engine was now cold. So I drive around awhile, did a few errands, see if it gets hot enough to shut down. Car runs fine. Next day I drive 30 minutes to the ski area, ski a couple hours, and drive back. Then did a bunch of errands, no problems. So what was really wrong?
Second:
As a possible wrinkle, the gas cap is one from AutoZone that I put on after the old OEM one died. While supposedly correct for the car, it is non-venting and a *lot* of air comes out of the tank when I loosen it. The tank also deforms, which seems to make the gas gauge read inaccurately--higher than it should. It may be that when the car stalled out it was actually out of gas, although the gauge read 1/4.
So did I run out of gas and have the DI fail at the same time? Seems unlikely. I have not checked the DI that was in use to see if it is truly NG. But would running out of gas cause the DI to misfire and throw a CEL? Seems possible, but you tell me. I'll get a new OEM cap and see what happens.
And Third:
The left side directionals now flash at 2x normal rate--like they would if there was a bad bulb--but all 3 bulbs flash. The four-way flashers and right side directionals work normally. Am thinking I'll replace all the left side bulbs (or all of them) and see if that makes a difference. But suggestions are welcome.
(on the upside, with light traffic all the way into Boston I was able to drive 85+ most of the way in without my bride encouraging me to slow down!)
