Bernie's comments make the most sense, so I'll go look at the hose he mentions.
After the car restarted I added gas so if the hose is the culprit it makes sense that the problem didn't recur.
I have periodically (as in once or twice a year) gotten a code (forget the number) that points to an incorrect flow to the evap canister, which I imagine could result from the hose Bernie mentions being clogged. I have cleared the code and it doesn't come back for months. In fact, I got it a month or so back (after overfilling the gas tank). I cleared it and it stayed off until the day or two before the car stalled. If a vacuum is being created in the tank it all makes sense.
But now one person here says it should be a non-vented gas cap and one says it should be vented. So which is it? With that hose functioning correctly it would seem that a non-vented would be fine, as the hose would be doing the venting.
