Definitely don't see 9000s around any more and the experts that really know the pre-GM Saabs have been retiring or passing away. I do daily drive my '97 9000 but have other vehicles that can be used if it's laid up for repairs.
I'm surprised though that you mentioned rear brake calipers being difficult to find. I just replaced mine about 2 weeks ago and AutoZone got them for me in just a couple of days. The rockauto.com site shows them as available as well, but I prefer to source that kind of part locally for ease of returning cores, or in the case of returning defective parts. It also appears the rear calipers are not all that difficult to rebuild as long as the piston is in decent shape:
