Your favorite 99s? Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Thu, 5 Aug 2010 12:24:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Since I don't have a 99 at present to ask for technical help on this board, I figured I'd keep things interesting around here by asking the "other" questions about life with a 99. The questions where there are no right or wrong answers, but more emotions, things like that. I hope there is a good response, and if a thread gets interesting enough, it may make an appearance in Nines!
So the question for this week is:
What are your favorite 99s? Break it into two parts: 99s that you've owned, and 99s that you lust after (is there such a thing?).
For me, the first part is pretty easy. I've technically owned 4 99s (meaning I paid money for them), but only drove and really worked on two. My first Saab, a 1976 99 GL sedan in Caroline Blue (see pic), and my 1980 99 GLi in Antelope Brown. I had a lot of fun with the '80, and did a LOT of work on it, but my favorite 99 that I owned was the '76. That car really solidified my love of Saabs.
I bought it from Hyannis Saab back in 1983, for actually more than I paid for my latest 9-5! It was also my very first manual transmission! Oh, just getting it home was an adventure. Colleagues of mine in the Coast Guard had Saabs, one a Chamotte Brown 99 3-door, the other an early 900 EMS. I really liked the driving position, the visibility, and the agility of these little Swedish cars.
I drove that car for more than 4 years, before the rust monster took hold. Funny, though, today, I'd just have fixed that rust, but I didn't know better at the time, and upgraded to a 1984 900 turbo.
I would love to own another 99 of similar vintage.
As for 99s I don't own, there's the one-of-a-kind 1976 99 Turbo prototype in the Museum on Trollhättan. From the pearlescent paint, to the multi-toned brown leather seating, it's just a special car.
After that, any 99 EMS, but especially those in Orange...
So that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! :-)
What's your thoughts?
Regards,
Larry West
