As I recall, the color code would be on a small aluminum plate, along the left inner fender top, near the windshield base. See the pick linked below for what it looks like. This is for a 99 SSE in US trim, painted in "Copper Coral Metallic". Interestinglly, in my old 99 manual, there are two codes for Copper Coral Metallic, neither of which match this one!
There's marginally some logic to this code system, vs the simpler three-number system used on cars from about 1980 (and Sonetts had their own color numbering scheme). The first letter or letters indicate a grouping of similar colors (R for reds, BL for Blue, YB for Yellow/Brown??), the number in the middle is the particular number color in the group, and the last letter or letters indicate the supplier of that paint color. Sometimes two paint companies made the same color for Saab, and they were used at different plants, so cars built at Trollhättan would get one suffix, while cars built in Belgium would get a different suffix. Sometimes a "BL 6 H" and a "BL 6 G" are wildly differing tones of the same color...
(that's one of the charming things about Saab. They didn't really start to act like a "big" car company till the end of the 96 & 99 production and early 900 production...)
Some late 99 colors have three-digit equivalents, like Black, Marble White, etc.
