Really sounds like ignition timing. The mechanical advance mechanism in the Bosch distributor can get sticky and the centrifugal and vacuum advance will not work. The hot exhaust sounds like a classic symptom of retarded timing under those conditions. You may also want to pop the valve cover off and make sure that the valve timing is on the marks. Pretty much all of our US cars are fuel injection, so I can't say much about the carburetor, but an engine running lean will also be hot and low on power.
