Glad you finally found a cause! I am doubtful that ethanol is the culprit, it really doesn't impact valve seat wear typically. All Saab B motors I think originally had hardened valve seats and should work fine with unleaded fuel. The early B Turbo engines had a lot of valve seat wear due to high valve temperatures; there were several valve and fuel/spark changes over the first few years of the Turbo and H engines seemed pretty robust in that regard. It's possible that your valve seats were replaced during the valve job with material that was not hardened, although that would be surprising in this day. I've done a couple of cylinder heads in the past few years and specified "Stellite" valve seat material, it's extremely hard (and must be precision ground) and was originally used for natural gas engines where the fuel provides zero lubricity. You will probably want to check the valve clearance again in 10,000 km to see if the wear is continuing.
