Hello to everyone,
I thought I'd post an update so that my experience may serve others...
About a week ago I checked the valve clearance and lo and behold, they were all absolutely wrong. One had no clearance at all, and the seven others had less than one third of the minimum checking clearance.
Looks like some massive valve recession has occured over the past 20k miles/30k km since I had the valve job done. The only reason I can come up with for it happening is the 5 to 10% ethanol in the fuel. I will be using lead replacement additive going forward and see if the problem comes back.
Yesterday, having sourced the appropriate shims (one I had to sand down with a belt sander because it was not available anywhere), I adjusted the clearances, checked the timing again and readjusted the mixture on the carb. The engine is now smooth as it should and performance is out of the previous world.
Many thanks to all who contributed to this thread!
