Baab,
Larry gave a good description of Lambda vs. non-Lambda distributors. However, folks have typically not had much success trying to get a Lambda fuel distributor to run in a non-lambda car. Too bad, because at this point there are a lot more good spares of Lambda units out there - the last non-Lambda units were 1980 99s; all 1980 900s were Lambda and some 1979s were (California and high altitude cars) also Lambda (I have an NOS exhaust downpipe for a non-Lambda 900 if anybody needs one). I recently got a non-lamda FD from Bill Jacobsen at Sports Car Service in Delaware. There are a couple of NOS ones still in Saab stock if you want to get really crazy.
However, not too much to go wrong with the FD itself - if it is not either a) leaking fuel out the bottom, or, b)causing one injector to be on full blast all the time the pump is on, then your problem is likely elsewhere. Do you have 1) Saab service manual which describes how the whole thing works, and, 2) Pressure gauges for testing fuel system?
I have found that you really need to start with the basics and step through the whole fuel system (pump, check valve, accumulator, return pressure regulator (part of FD), warm up regulator, airflow vane, injectors, thermal time switch, vacuum impulse contact, injectors) and the wiring associated with each to really sort out the system. Otherwise you will be a frustrated cowboy swapping parts until the cows come home....
Best of luck, let me know if you need some tools/troubleshooting support off-line and we can set that up.
