I was told the same thing. I had a spare one lying around and thought I would take it apart to see what made it work. After seeing one apart and putting it back together (did not check if it leaked just that it could be reassembled the same way) I decided to try it on the one for my 76 99 ems.
I can not stress enough how important it is not scratch the mating surfaces or metal gasket. I used lots of carb cleaner to clean the metal gasket and mating surface and let dry. You do not want to wipe clean the mating surfaces with a rag as any fiber left behind would result in a leak.
