I guess I am stuck on the thought that as an oil ages, it viscosity index improver package degrades. The molecules which pull tightly together to be compact when cold, elongate when hot. This changes the viscosity. When hot, these molecules are brocken by shear and chemical attack. Thus a 10W30 tends to break down to a 10W base stock.
I expect that Dick will make some comments on this.
So I don't know what a 0W30 acts like when it is old. Perhaps the viscocity index improvers are more durable, or more durable in a synthetic base stock.
Valvoline used to have a synthethic base stock, where the base stock exibited the viscocity indexing required without a VI additive. This is what went into the V12?V10 Vet engines that were made by OMC. I used to use that when it was available. But as it seems to have been off market for a few years, I have no reason to believe that it is the same oil now. So there was no additive to break down.
And factories ship vehicles with Mobil One. I am suspicious. What a PR event. I would not be surprised if Mobil supplied that oil for free.
A story.
Hospitals used to get discounts on baby formula. The manufactures wanted the babies started on their product. They insisted that some of the product also be sent home with mother when she checked out. There was competition. This progessed to the point where hospitals are paid by the manufactures to take there free product. Some hospitals get tylenol for free, and they bill you for it too. So quess why tylenol can say that is the most used in hospitals?
So a factory loads Mobil One in its product. Does this mean that it is the best synthetic oil, or a good marketing plan by Mobil? Facts do not equal truth.
