I keep reading here about how former owners of 900/9-3/9000 hatchbacks bemoan the fact that they can't get a new hatchback. They miss the awesome utility the hatch provided. And the swept back-end was sexy too!
Do they also miss the chassis flex that has disappeared in the 9-5, resulting in significantly better handling for the 9-5 sedans & wagons?
I believe that the lateral structural members of the chassis that have to be removed to create the great maw of an opening for the hatchback, significantly compromise the structural integrity of the car, degrading the car from both a safety and handling perspective. This would apply to convertibles as well.
Saab's alternative would be to SIGNIFICANTLY beef up the chassis pan and sides. I believe that they do this for the convertibles, for which buyers are willing to pay a significant premium. Would Saab buyers also be willing to pay a significant premium for a hatchback?
I don't think so.

'01 9-5 Aero Wagon, with a lot of utility, but not as much carrying flexibility as a hatchback, though I do have the roof rails.
