" I believe that the lateral structural members of the chassis that have to be removed to create the great maw of an opening for the hatchback, significantly compromise the structural integrity of the car, degrading the car from both a safety and handling perspective." Mighty strong words - I don't think anything was compromised from a safety or structural integrity perspective: the 9000 is still a relatively safe/structurally sound platform. The 9-5's rigidity comes at a price and every design has it's compromises: any engineer will agree. The 9-5 is much heavier than the 9000. This isn't to dis' 9-5's or station wagons - only to counter the implication that the 9000 is a flimsy or less safe design. It's been my experience that with all structures, there's such a thing as being too rigid, as well as, too flexible. IMHO, the 9000 suffers from neither.
