Firstly, no one said the C900, NG900 or 9000 were flimsy. Every one of them has been amongst the safest cars of their day. But rigidity is a different story....The hatch's you mention being built on the epsilon platform can be very different than the hatches Saab built. The Maxx looks like a wagon with the roof line just above the bumper line. Much more rigid than the NG 900 whose roof line ended over 2 feet from the end of the bumper. That difference allows a lot of twist that the more boxy hatch/wagon designs don't have. The Opel Vectra 5 dr hatch is built more like the 9000, nicely hiding a hatch in a sedan looking package, but guess what ? testers find the saloon more flingable than the hatch.
And yes I miss my '00 hatch's versatility, but we have our '97 900 for the hauling duties. And no SUVs in this household. Since most American and Canadian households have at least 2 cars, why can't one of them have a trunk ? If Saab needs trunks to survive, so be it. But bring back a good turbo hatch so when our '97 wears out (240,000 miles but looks new) someday, we'll stay in teh Saab family.
