You may think that the law is improper or that the law is enforced inconsistantly - my experience with the Colorado State Patrol does not lead me to a different conclusion. Never-the-less it is a law, and as citizens are we not bound to follow the laws of our nation? Why is this one so easy to dismiss? Because its inconvienient for you? Should I dismiss the laws against theft because corporate america has been stealing from me through price fixing?
I'm not trying to argue in defense of the crooked sherrifs of rural america. I think rather that if you are caught with your hand in the cookie jar - you shouldn't argue that you were just checking to see how many cookies were left. If you did something wrong then admit it and pay the price - if you think you're being mistreated then argue your case in court. If you think the law is immoral then petition your elected representatives and form a consumer driving group with the power of the AARP - if you form that group I'll join it. Don't try to weasel your way out of $50 if you know you're in the wrong - that makes you no better than the person who sued McDonalds for having coffee too hot.
It sounded to me like the original poster knew they were in the wrong and were trying to weasel out of the penalty.
by the way, your comparisons of a unrepentant speeder to MLK or Rosa Parks are laughable. Seriously -have you ever tried to shoot that crap past your wife??? Mine keeps me honest with a verbal dope-slap as is appropriate.
I've heard the bit about highway fatalities decreasing with increased speed limits and I can't say I'm persuaded. Correlation is not causation (ever read about how cracks in the sidewalk "cause" higher crime?) - how much did automotive safety change in that same period? How can you be sure that it wasn't just a temporary fluctuation from people getting used to the higher speed limit?
