Nathan,
I Googled the coffee thing and found some interesting results. It turns out I was wrong about the coffee melting through the cup (hmmm, guess I should research these things BEFORE I post) but McD's does brew its coffee significantly (and needlessly) hotter than most of its competitors, to the point where a spill can cause 3rd degree burns much more quickly. They have also settled numerous other claims of serious burns out of court without changing their policies, something the jury probably took in to account when making its decision. Any way, it's an interesting case no matter how one feels about it, the link below is to a reprint of a Wall Street Journal article on it.
