"Author's" note (lol): I'm by no means a professional on this topic and didn't write this in attempt to insult anyone. Keep in mind the first c900 came out even before I was born! Some generalizations are made, try not to get caught up in them. These are just some things that I have picked up on since becoming a Saab fan and would like to share. On that note...
I came up with this theory while discussing Saab and AWD on another thread and instead of posting it there, I thought it more appropriate (and respectful to the original poster) that I give it its own. These are some of my brief observations:
It seems when Saab first came out with the c900 ("the car that made Saab") they became immensely attached to it since it was such a success that they hung on to it perhaps longer than they should have. I mean, for over a decade there was virtually no major alteration in their design. They seemed get so caught up in their present car, or at least certain design concepts (FWD and turbo, for example), that they lost track of what made it so great to begin with, which was innovation. They began concentrating so much on FWD and turbo instead of furthering research in newer concepts of the time such as AWD. Tradition is something to be cherished, not dwelled upon. Notice how all their cars are now turbo and FWD. Not to say that is bad or wrong, but they need to keep moving forward. I think this is what Saab has been stumbling over for the past several years.
This is also why I think I was initially disappointed with the new 9-3. I was expecting/hoping for a car that would reclaim the SAAB name and do for the company what the c900 did in its day; something truly innovative, not just another sport sedan. At the same time, I understand that “another sports sedan” is what people want and Saab couldn't afford to miss out on that market. I also respect the way Saab went about creating the 9-3 by making it something more than “just another sport sedan.” I think Saab will only benefit from their new product. Fortunately, I also see the genuine Saab innovation in some of their concepts, which provides me with comfort knowing that behind the new 9-3's more conventional skin is the true Saab spirit.
Any thoughts?
