have studied AWD for decades. Their conclusion has always been that the marginal increase in mobility afforded by AWD vs. FWD is hardly worth the penalty in fuel economy, accomdations, and initial cost. It's right up there with cupholders, another abomination in the sight of the Swedes.
AWD has been around for 20 years or more. Remember the first Audi Quattro? bombed in the market place. BMW AWD. ditto. the first MB 4-matic? Same thing. Only Subaru was able to make anything of their AWD, and then only after Paul Hogan gave them some advertising flair. Mainly for Subaru, it was b/c the FWD version of their cars paled in comparison to Honda and Toyota, and were boat anchors on the lots. So they just dumped the FWD version in favor of all AWD and promoted the hell out of it. For so many years they had the niche to themselves, so they did OK.
AWD was never, ever a marketplace success until the CAFE inspired SUV came on the scene. Now these trucks are such evil handling, unstable pieces of work that in RWD form they are undriveable on poor surfaces - so the myth of AWD was born. It's all smoke and mirrors, but it's what sells.
