AWD is all smoke and mirrors you say? Have you ever driven an Audi Quattro or a Subaru AWD? Particularly in the snow and rain?
Now I love Saabs, but my love of Saabs can't overcome physics, especially when dealing with the best AWD system available--the Torsen in the Audi Quattro? and Subaru has the second the best system which explains their success. But I will agree that most other AWD or 4WD systems (see BMW, Mercedes, SUVs, etc.) are not much of an improvement over front wheel drive, but the Audi & Subaru systems are a big improvement in poor weather--speaking as someone who has had substantial real world experience with driving a variety of drivetrains in inclement weather.
True, the Audi Quattro was not a big seller at first, but a lot of great automotive inventions weren't either. Like front wheel drive and turbo, for example.
Now, I agree--those are some great arguments that the marginal improvements (or big improvement only if you have an Audi or Subaru) aren't worth it for the average 90% or so of the population and it has turned into a marketing ploy for SUVs for the most part, but for the few of us who do have inclement weather driving needs, it is worth it. But then again, I never thought Saabs were being built for the average 90% of the population.
