for the Audi and Subaru systems the hype is worth it...for the rest of the systems--particularly SUVs--I agree, it is way over hyped and not worth it.
From reading your posting, I suppose I may have slightly misunderstood Stephen then...I was referring to the real world value of AWD while he was referring more to the marketing.
Although you mention a lot of qualification is required for AWD's dramatic strengths? Let me put it this way then, if you drive in snow and rain a lot, a sophisticated AWD system (such as Audi's or Subaru's) will give you a vast improvement. An AWD equipped Audi will be a dramatic improvement over the exact same Audi except with only FWD in the snow.
On the other hand, and what maybe is the crux of your and Stephen's point, is that yes, I would rather be in a FWD Saab than a 4WD Ford Explorer for example in almost all cases...but of course I'm not advocating the average SUV system, I'm only for the Audi and Subaru systems...and thus very interested in the upcoming Saab 9-2. Although my dream car would be maybe a C900 equipped with an Audi Quattro drivetrain.
