...I run a 4WD. If I don't rotate, the front tires get pretty beat up due to the fact that they pivot to turn. They begin to chew up sooner. As I have a 4WD, if I let the front tires attain a smaller diameter than the rears, I will damage my transfer case. I need to rotate and I need to replace all tires at once to keep diameters the same.
On 2WD with LSD's, it is a similar concept. You need both tires to be of a similar diameter or the LSD will have problems.
Also, if tires in the front are different, you will pull slightly to one side. Compensating for that can kill up to 5% of your mileage, or more in extreme cases.
It is no longer just about the tires boys and girls, it is about drive train and mileage.
