Some, not all, had porus block problems and needed entirely new engines. The vast majority, AFAIK, were replaced under warranty.
It looks like you're trying to stay within a certain price point by your choices ($15-$20k, perhaps?), however, buying cars that old is very risky no matter what the brand. Please forgive me if I'm off base here, but, a car that you buy for the price of a new Hyundai will still have the commensurate expenses of a $65-$75k car. Maintenance and parts are still VERY expensive (the brands you list will certainly surpass the costs of Saab ownership - particularly the Jaguar). If you do choose the Jag, be prepared for a very frequent and wide variety of electrical problems. I have a close friend who has a '95 Van Den Plas and it is CONSTANTLY ailing.
For similar money, you may wish to consider VW/Audi products. You can buy a 2000 Audi A6 for $15k with very low miles and very high reliability. Costs of ownership are going to be roughly on-par with the Saab (if not a bit less), but, they do tend to be more reliable. Aftermarket sources for maintenance and parts are very easy to find also. Technologically, the Audi is superior to the above-mentioned and it is at least as roomy and well-appointed. Plus, with the Audi, you're going to gain one of the world's finest AWD systems. Not knowing where you're located, of course, this may or may not be of real benefit.
Also, you may wish to consider a 2001 or 2002 VW Passat. The Passat is about 8/10 of the A6 and you're likely to find one with a CPO warranty. Of course, the Passat doesn't have the cache' of the Audi or others, but, it's a DARN good car for the money and is remarkably good to drive.
FWIW.
