I'd probably agree with this sentiment. I don't think I'd risk my financial future on anything from the original list - those years were not the pinnacle of Jaguar's nor Benz's accomplishments, and the early V8 BMWs were prone to issues - most were probably fixed, but I wouldn't want to risk it.
The Audi suggestion is not a bad one, but choose wisely. Audi (and VW) had VERY low reliability scores for years and years, and while parts & maintenance for each may be more available than for a Saab, I can't say they're cheaper. My sister pays $85/hr for labor on her 2003 Jetta (same price as the Saab dealer) and my buddy just paid $1400 to a very reputable independant shop for a clutch on his 2001 A4 2.8q. VAG stuff is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
Based on my experience, your price range is kind of the nether regions of the automotive world. You can't buy anything new that you'd want to drive (save maybe a Mazda3 or a Honda Fit - both of which are pretty cool in their own, different ways) and while you're not scraping the bottom of the used car barrel, you aren't clearly into off-lease and CPO highline cars either.
Have you considered maybe something less fancy but newer? You've got solid fun cars like couple year old Mazda6s right in there... And they come in hatchbacks. :D
