Well I just can't imagine the LS or the Q driving any different than the E-class or XJ you have on your list. They are designed, built, and marketed to the same target audience. Yes, the BMW will certainly have different (read: better) driving characteristics because that's how BMW typically does things. As for the others, they aren't known for dynamic or 'soulfull' driving attributes.
And I wouldn't be so fast to categorize Japanese cars as soulless. For instance, I present: the Miata, NSX, G35, 300 & 350Z, Sentra SE-R (1991-95), RX-7, Supra, WRX, Evo, Galant VR-4, 3000GT VR-4, IS, and the S2000 to name a few. I wouldn't really define these cars as soulless. Sure, a Corolla and an Accord aren't all that exciting but neither is much of the competition in their respective segments.
Again, if you want quality and lower cost of ownership the LS will outshine the others. If you want something that drives better, go with the BMW. And if you REALLY want something with soul, there is only one country of origin to look to: Italy! (Of course, you'll spend a lot of time picking up that soul from the side of the road when it falls off, but that's just part of the charm of driving an Italian car!)
