Reccommendations for a used semi-beater 4x4?

We're thinking about picking up a used SUV. We do a lot of backcountry stuff, and the dirt roads to trailheads in Colorado are a heck of a lot rougher than they were back in VT. We won't drive it much, so we could probably go for something even cheaper than below, but I don't want to worry about it not starting etc. Like to spend no more than 5-6,000.
Thinking about a Mitsubishi Montero, probably 1995-1998, or an Isuzu Rodeo of the same vintage. They seem to be a lot cheaper than the used 4Runners and Pathfinders. I don't want a Wrangler or CJ - too small - but what about a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee? Friend has a Grand Cherokee with 130K with no problems.
The 9-5 wagon may be a litter lower on the priority list now....
