I have thought through this for a winter car (skiing) myself and I have owned a few of these:

Older box style Jeep Cherokee -- I had an 88 Cherokee 4x4. Went to 140K before I sold it and only sold it because AC was out and expensive to fix (I was in TX). Easy car to work on and same body style from 87 to 01. Very durable.

Nissan Xterra - Cheap used and reliable Nissan. Rough ride, but not a bad truck for the money - certainly good 4x4 ability.

Tahoe - I would only get the newer ones 2000+. Cheap and suprisingly reliable. Currently have an 02 Suburban Z71 after owning a 00 Tahoe. Both have been flawless.

Stay away from the Rodeo. I think that car is pretty crappy. I had a few as rentals when I was in Colorado and it was a major dog in the Mountains. Same thing for the Montereo and 4runner. Land Rovers are a nightmare and despite being a V8 they are underpowered. My wife and I test drove one back in 1999 and I will never waste my time again. Don't buy a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee - very bad year for that car 2000+ are better, but the newer Grand Cherokees have had some issues. I owned a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited when the first came out and got a 2000 a year later since I had so many issues with the 99.

If I did get a beater 4x4 it would be an Xterra. Second would be the Tahoe and then the Cherokee.

Good luck.
