the v8 is a chrysler design - I think the same one found in dakotah or Ram trucks. Don't know a thing about it, but from a simple minded perspective it will be more expensive to fix (two more cylinders, two heads instead of one, more oil capacity...) AND get worse gas mileage.
My dad has a dodge ram w/ the larger small block v8. He gets ~12mpg on the highway. He has also had a number of Cherokees with the 4.0 i-6, these seem to get 18-20 everywhere.
An aquaintence from work with the Grand cherokee and v8 put a K&N filter and free flow exhaust on the v8 and saw gas mileage go from 16-18 on highway to 22-24.
