AWD is a feature. It depends on whether you really need it (like you live in big snow country) or just think you do. Subaru and every other car maker makes a big deal out of AWD or 4WD, preying on people's fear of bad weather. Hey, it sells cars, people like their Subies. But under 99% of road and weather conditions a 9-5 with ESP, traction control and 4 snows will get you any place AWD will, assuming it's driven properly. We live in NH and 4 snows on our Saabs work just fine. AWD is better, just not necessary.
For your friend with babies, the Outback may be fine, and one has room for all the essential junk that infants require. As they grow you'll find just how much a closet the back seat of an Outback is, especially with car seats. And it gets worse. Our kids are teens and no way we could do a trip longer than 2 hours in a Subie. In fact, my wife and I alone took a 45 minute test drive and it couldn't end soon enough. They are not the same class of car. And Subies struggle to get 25 mpg highway. The 9-5 gets 32 at 75 mph, 23-24 around town.
For $15K you can get a decent 9-5 wagon if you shop around, maybe even with CPO or other aftermarket warranty.
