The clear cut off was the Phase II EJ25 engine that came on board in 1999 in the Imprezas and Legacys/Outbacks and 2000 on Foresters. The switch to the new head design (and, more importantly, new head gasket) made it far less prone to failure. There were some isolated cases of head gasket failures on Phase II EJ25 but not too many. As long as one uses Subaru coolant and coolant additive, the risk of head gasket failure is very low. Dealers and independent mechanics who used improper coolant are responsible for most failures. Subaru dealers tend to use all kinds of crap when they service cars under warranty -- really the cheapest off-brand, weird stuff you can find.
The later EZ25 engines are much less sensitive to proper maintenance and thus have fewer issues.
H-6 has been known to be pretty trouble-free. It is fairly gutless but smooth and more refined. Not too much torque, no manual transmission and the fact that it was mostly used in the heaviest models all conspire agains it.
I have never heard of any clutch troubles. AWD cars in general are much more sensitive to good shifting technique. People need to learn to wait for the gearbox. Any sloppy shifting, not rev matchings and/or double clutching will lead to premature clutch wear. Early EJ25 clutches used extremely weak pressure plates specifically to reduce stress on the gearbox. This lead to many EJ25 cars developing grabby and generally very touchy clutch feel. Many people never got used to driving them smoothly.
I have had 4 Subies with manual gearboxes and never had any clutch trouble.
