Subie clutches

A former roomate had an Outback wagon that went through two clutches before 90k. She didn't like to let people drive it for that reason.
So I contacted an indy Subie mechanic and he said it was due to non-self-adjusting hydraulic clutches and a bunch of low-end torque.
Incidentally, he said the best way to overcome it was to start off in 1st by slowly releasing the clutch w/out hitting the gas. Let the car begin to roll forward before you step on the gas. He was right - the car will definitely launch without the gas provided you (in his words) "aren't on a hill and have 18 people in the car." This does not work as well in my OG9-3.
